General description of the collection: The Alonzo and Jason Smith papers include personal correspondence of three members of a Massachusetts family before and during the Civil War. Most letters are from or about Private Jason Smith of the 35th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment from September 1862 to July 1864. The collection also includes letters of and about Jason's brother Private Alonzo Smith of Battery L, 3rd Rhode Island Heavy Artillery, from 1856 to 1882. There are two letters form their uncle, Private Joseph Norton of the band of the 56th Massachusetts, dated April 7 and July 5, 1864.

Jason Smith was a private in the 35th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment from September 1862 to July 1864. However, from May to September of 1863, he was in the provost guard of the Second (2nd) Division of the IX (9th) Corps. He was then at Crab Orchard, Department (Dept.) of the Ohio, in the hospital and later in the provost force on guard there.
